CYO Basketball

by: Natalie O'Brien

FullSizeRender.jpgCYO stands for Catholic Youth Organization and is run through churches like St. John’s.  The teams can be girls and boys; for girls the teams can be divided up into all grades, whereas the boys’ teams are divided into freshmen/sophomores and juniors /seniors, with parents coaching. They decide when we practice. Practices are on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Every Saturday, we have games against other teams from different churches like Holy Spirit and Holy Cross. The games last 40 minutes, and the rule is you must have five players on the court or you cannot play the game. You also need at least ten players on your team in order to be eligible. This year there are three girls teams and five boy teams. The season lasts until February. Games start right in the morning at 10 a.m. and games end around 5 p.m. at the latest. The teams are always here to win but at the same time have fun together. Some teams enjoy having  team meals after practice or after the games. Towards the end of the season there is a championship tournament where each team from the girls and boys would play to see who would win the CYO  consolation. Then that team will get a t-shirt.  CYO basketball is a fun sport if you’re interested in playing.
